The Market Research Commandments IV

Know Your Market Competition And Win Easily

Today let’s finish up our work on how to best conduct your marketing research with the last section and possibly most important section on knowing your market and keyword competition for each keyword phrase you want to target before even getting involved in a marketplace.

We know now that it is crucial to have all four elements I have mentioned so far when going into a market niche in order to increase our business success chances 1000 fold. Those four elements once more are:

Find High Volume Traffic Keyword Searches

Target Want Market Keywords that have Commercial Value

Introduce Traffic Streams to USP products and services

Target Low Competition keywords which allow a quick ROI

The fourth market research element is really just another way of saying not to waste your time thinking you will easily dominate the most competitive keyword phrases without serious effort. Even if we follow all of these rules can we be sure we are even going to be able to beat the competition an take a top 3 position in the search engine and gain site traffic?

To be sure we will rank in the search engines for the purposes of organic and paid traffic based on Google’s rules which also carries over to Bing and Yahoo search as well. The two things we need to check are:

I. We must know the number of competitors in our marketplace or the SEOC column in the Market Samurai tool. This is the number of pages that mention our keyword phrase. 100k pages or less is a good size competition pool but the ideal suggested number is 30k or less which should allow you to rank in a few weeks at the top of Google. The number of competitors and the amount of competition is not a fast rule it has just been seen to usually be a good statistical range for lower competition. It is true that each market niche will have different competition levels regardless of number of pages.

II. We need to also know the strength of the top 10 competitor pages for our market keywords. This is really all that matters at all as far as getting free search engine traffic.

SO what things must we know to judge the strength of the top 10 competing web pages for a keyword?”

The On Page Factors Are:

Page Rank

Title Tag

Meta Description

H1 and H2 Tag

URL Keywords

The Off Page Factors Are:

Number of Links to Page

Number of Links to Domain

Number of .gov and/or .edu Links to Domain

DMOZ and/or Yahoo Links to Domain

PR of Links to Page

Keyword Anchor Text to Page

There is no guessing with how to get SEO rankings for the most part it is a science especially when you use Market Samurai. You will know on each keyword how hard it will be to rank against your competition. Ranking will be even easier than what Market Samurai shows you if you use these proven methods when building your site online:

SEO Themed Siloing including relevant home page, categories and articles.

Get relevant keyword anchor text links coming into all of your sites pages.

Use a Mini Net Syndication Method which includes social web 2.0 platforms as well as content syndication across many content syndication platforms to surround and feed into your main sales site.

Use Proper Syndication Tools to push and boost the power of every effort and piece of content you make.

Here is my USP or incentive for you to buy Market Samurai from Logiscape. Anyone who purchases Market Samurai through me may email or post a comment on the blog asking any market research question relating to the tool and how to best use it to improve your business.

The Market Research Commandments III

Matching Streams of Traffic With Products and Your USP

The second important marketing research commandment we just went over was commercial value in keywords or what is sometimes called OCI “Online Commercial Intention”. There are a couple more things to consider in this regard but let’s also take a look at the third commandment which is a must. You must take an affiliate, existing or new product or service and match that product or service with appropriate traffic streams. In addition you need to consider how and why to offer specific products when doing your market research. It is a common sense approach to decision making and most marketers just don’t use this concept.

Ask yourself two questions:

“What product or service can I offer to this traffic stream?”

“How can I offer it with it’s own unique selling proposition?”

By asking these two questions what you are doing is essentially playing two roles at once as a marketer. You are following the age old economist theory of supply and demand or “giving the market what it wants in the right place at the right time”. Many people call this affiliate marketing which is fine but it is broader than that… what you are doing is satisfying a demand.

The second question addresses a more powerful and more difficult question and skill. “How can I offer something which is either a hybrid product, has added value, is completely a novel idea or any combination of these three?”

This is what some people call product development and some call this alchemy. It is a purely imaginative and creative skill. It is not measurable and can have immense value. It is the ability to coin new ideas completely. It comes to some people quite easily and others not so much. Sometimes such ideas flow rapidly and sometimes it is a process which takes weeks or even months.

Do not rack your head over it if you cannot make this alchemy part of marketing reveal a novel approach for you. The easy way to move forward within your market is to simply match traffic to products and services for starters and then use a hybrid approach or a value added proposition to that idea.

Let us backtrack to my latter point of finalizing commercial value when comparing keywords. In order to finalize commercial value let us look at our data through a different lense than our last example. Now let’s use this model for analyzing commercial value:

1) SEOV or SEO Value which is the sum of adding organic traffic or searches per day the top spot would expect to get from Google times the cost per click of that word in Adwords top positioning. We are assuming that the value is at least as high as the cost of the keyword otherwise competitors wouldn’t pay that price.

2) OCI or the pure Online Commercial Intention number as pulled from Bing. It is good to look at this number because it often reveals the percent of those keyword searchers who intend to buy. We cannot see that with CPC alone.

3) USP where traffic meets products and services. We must use our ideas to measure from a conceptual space if we can create a combination which is not already existing in the space of promotion to these keywords. This is the creative and ground breaking method by which whole new businesses are born.

It can take your research to a new level, but for completely new ideas you should test the water before moving forward with your idea. You can run a survey from: related forums, social sites, and competitor sites. The other option is to buy traffic and survey it about your idea and to glean new ideas.

4) Competition must be considered for the keywords you intend to target as a final measure of assurance. Do not proceed until you have looked at your competition. I will present the competition analysis in the last part of this series.

Here is my incentive for you to buy Market Samurai from Logiscape. Anyone who purchases Market Samurai through me may email or post a comment on the blog asking any market research question relating to the tool and how to best use it to improve your business. That’s right ask me anything at all and I will respond with my best information and even help you with your marketing idea within reason.

The Market Research Commandments II

Target Keywords With Commercial Intent Or Flop

The second major thing for us to pay attention to when exploring our marketing research is to target keywords which have commercial value. We can call this “Commercial Intent” or a Want Market. Once again this idea of a perfect prospect is defined by their need for a solution or an irrational desire to purchase something. (some people would call these types of people fanatics)

The major thing we are trying to determine here is what types of keyword searches are being used by buyers. Who is a buyer in our market based on the psychology of the keywords they are typing in the search engines? This might sound very daunting to think: “OK, wow now I need to figure out what the heck someone is thinking when they type a specific word into Google?”

The answer to the psychological question is NO this is much simpler than that. All you need to do is determine from common sense after researching your market keywords which ones would indicate a buying impulse from people and which do not. Now let me admit firstly that there will be keywords which don’t seem to be a buying prospect, but end up being buyers. This occurs in every market I have ever seen.

Your goal at the outset is not to find every single converting keyword under the sun, but only the ones which would more obviously convert into sales. This can be done by using one tool in aiding us to see the possible potential of a keyword for becoming a sale. We will use Market Samurai to help us find the more obvious keywords we are wanting, but also just to lay a groundwork which can be built upon.

When using market samurai we will need to look at several main data columns to indicate if the words we are looking at have sales potential or not. These data columns are:

AWCPC – Adwords Cost Per Click

AWCTR – Adwords Click Through Rate

OCI – Online Commercial Intent

AWCPC will show us what the number one positioned advertiser can expect to pay per click when a person who typed in our keyword clicks on the number one spot Adwords ad. This is crucial because it tells us if advertisers are spending money on our keyword. If there is a lot being paid for the top position we can guess that the keyword has value or the potential to create sales.

AWCTR will show us what percentage of people clicked on the number one ranked Adwords ad as a percentage of total traffic for our keyword. It is also another fairly good sign if the top advertiser is getting a high CTR that this keyword has many interested people. This is not a straight away sign of buyers but of interest for sure. You must now look at the ad that is ranked number one to get an idea why people are clicking on it. You will check to see if the ad is well written to just get a lot of clicks or if it appears the clicks are coming due to a buying interest. Not a clear indicator of buying but it certainly shows us how active people are in the market.

OCI will give you an idea based on BING’s data if people are likely to buy based on your keyword. It is not always accurate but once again can be a helpful indicator if a word is obviously a converting keyword.

Keep in mind to check these statistics Market Samurai yields against the actual sources of the data or the tools they come from just to be sure the software is accurate. Watch the following video to see how I use these pieces of data to gain an idea if my market keywords have sales potential or not. You won’t always have a clear indication when using this data if you have winning keywords or not, but more often than not you will.

Keep in mind to use common sense as well to decide if there is money to be made with these keywords by using a different approach to the market than other advertisers may be using.

Here is my incentive for you to buy Market Samurai from Logiscape. Anyone who purchases Market Samurai through me may email or post a comment on the blog asking any market research question relating to the tool and how to best use it to improve your business.

The Market Research Commandments

Ignore This Methodology At Your Demise

There are tons of marketers out there who teach various methods for performing market research and they have some good information to share on some new bit of good advice or a new tool which will give you an edge when finding markets to pursue.

What I am about to show you is as fool proof of a step by step list of marketing research as you will find anywhere. This is a no fluff way to uncover the traffic, sales potential, product positioning and competition analysis you need to have the best chance to succeed possible.

There are essentially four main steps to what I will call my “marketing research commandments“:

Find High Volume Traffic Keyword Searches

Target Want Market Keywords that have Commercial Value

Introduce Traffic Streams to USP products and services

Target Low Competition keywords which allow a quick ROI

Everyone knows finding high volume traffic keywords is essential to succeeding in online marketing, because without a constant stream of relevant visitors to your web site your business will not earn a return on investment and become a waste of time. This is why I use two tools to initially uncover large market area keywords right out of the gate once I know what area I am interested to investigate.

I use the Google External Keyword Tool and Market Samurai when I am wanting to easily uncover the possible areas of a market to target. I begin with the external keyword tool and then import my findings into Market Samurai just to be sure I don’t miss out on any keywords possible.

You must ask the question: Are people searching in my market niche? You then must answer the question what are they searching for based on the keywords I am finding?”

Then you need to filter these keywords in such a way that the amount of daily searches going on with your overall keyword list is adequate enough to possibly convert enough sales to allow you to have a positive ROI without much tweaking and testing. If you already have an existing product or service as a starting point you will be able to roughly determine the answer to this question. Try to use very conservative estimates with a 1% starting conversion rate on sales expected or less as this is a safe way to think.

It should be obvious to you then that if you get 100 site visitors total per day for your site based on your batch of keywords you will target and being in the number one spot for one or more words which will pull in 100 searches a day that you can survive or profit as a business quickly. This is not an easy thing to guess at all what your site visitors will do once they arrive on your site, but just play it as safe as you can and allow that sales will be extremely low at the beginning. They could in fact be 10 times what you expect, but plan for the worst and you will succeed much more often.

Please watch the following video as I show you my step by step using the Google External Keyword Tool and Market Samurai together to uncover as many niche keywords which could pertain to an existing product or new product you will create based on your research. You will be introducing streams of site traffic to a unique selling proposition so keep this concept in mind when researching initially.

Here is my USP or incentive for you to buy Market Samurai from Logiscape. Anyone who purchases Market Samurai through me may email or post a comment on the blog asking any market research question relating to the tool and how to best use it to improve your business. That’s right ask me anything at all and I will respond with my best information and even help you with your marketing idea within reason.

Market Research Blueprints With Google Wonder Wheel

Why The “Market Triangulation Method” Will Work For You

Most Internet marketers today who are trying to sell physical products, digital products and services on-line are performing marketing research backwards. They begin with a product which is selling and very hot within certain affiliate marketing circles thinking if there are marketers making money already with this product then they will also be able to succeed. This is of course one way of making money and it does work quite often, but it is often much more difficult to sell these commonly hot products than taking a top down approach towards a market and finding what you can offer it.

This is putting the cart before the horse so to speak and while many marketers make a fortune doing just this type of marketing…they are not only leaving valuable integration points of their markets untapped, but missing out on a lot more valuable business models. Would you rather approach a market knowing all the possibilities of monetizing it or would you rather just sell blindly? It is up to you and either approach can work, but remember that the marketer who knows his market better has a much higher percentage of profiting given the same actions and ability.

If you use my Market Triangulation Method you will know where all the traffic, products and ideas exist in a market from multiple angles. The work in building your web business is the hard part, but why start out handicapped to begin with? The marketers who make a killing by simply selling things which are hot without looking at other possibilities need to have some advantage or unique selling proposition in order to succeed because they are swimming with the rest of the fish. You as a marketer can form a whole new marketing proposition and live outside of the competitive box before anyone else catches on to your new approach.

The Market Triangulation Method (has three parts):

Marketing Idea Brainstorming – Locate a new potential market based on your own interest using the Google SK Tool or use your existing product or service idea then…

Locate Your Traffic Streams – Use Google Wonder Wheel and the Google External Keyword Tool (AKA – Google Sandbox) in combination to see all possible market areas and keywords within your market then…

Locate All Potential Products And Services – Find out how much initial potential your market contains by using Amazon, E Bay, Click Bank and Commission Junction as beginning product finders based on the traffic containing keywords from the last step. This also unlocks new keywords based on new products which you might not have used the names of in your traffic research. You can then begin to dig into your market based on multiple competitor sites of all traffic and product keywords as deep as you like until you find a unique approach towards your market.

This is the absolute best three pronged approach to market research I have been able to develop by combining various methods which are not new. When you use these principles in combination with a the general principles I have laid out in previous articles about “Want Marketing” you cannot fail. My next series will show you why in more detail.

Bird’s Eye View of Market Research vs. Keyword Research

Why You are Probably Missing The Big Picture

Most marketers online mistakenly confuse keyword marketing research with marketing research and no wonder why with all the keyword and marketing tools out today. In fact most internet marketing research until recently has focused on keyword research, and simplistically looked at which keywords have the most potential to be used to sell a product or service. The landscape is quickly changing and it is a good plan now not to just shoot at the first level of low hanging keywords or the long tail combination of some set of keywords without also getting a bird’s eye view on your market’s landscape. Whether you are doing Pay Per Click, SEO or Targeted advertising it has become seriously advantageous to know how keywords fit into your larger market geography.

Discovering the relationship between keywords and important market phrases and the various market segments which are relevant and best chance sellers for your USP is your end goal. You must have a global or wider lens view your market so you can see alternate vantage points with which to enter your marketplace. This allows you to chart a strategy for all possible and best segments to enter within your market and capture on your website for the best return on your time and monetary investments. If you decide to go after the easy to rank sectors of your market then you can feel good knowing you passed on other areas because of difficulty to enter those areas. If you can see where the easier money might be made in your niche you can also get to it more rapidly rather than going after larger market sectors.

So where to start? When researching your market using all these keyword and marketing tools out there which can drive you mad at their sheer volume what do you need to know? It seems all of them have different functions and features making it so impossible to know if you are missing out on some gem of data you need. Well once you know what to look for you will realize that depending on what type of marketing you are doing there are only so many things you can know before entering. This is a problem for most marketers and they never get going because they feel they just don’t have enough data to enter a market.

The best thing you as a marketer can do is to find basic free tools which give you a large part of what you need to know to enter a market and then supplement that information with one to three paid tools. The very first place to begin is with the Google External Keyword tool and the Google Search based keyword tool. I actually stumbled across their search based keyword tool months ago and found some awesome functions that at the time no one I knew of was talking about. What I realized was that this tool along with another tool called Google Insights would allow me to pick up on new trending long tail keywords. These keywords were growing in popularity and could be used to add relevant articles to my sites.

The Google Search Based Keyword Tool would also allow me to garner valuable information about market themes or areas which were bigger to consider as site topics. Combine these three tools together and you have the ability to gather up relevant semantical areas to your main market topic, discover new niches and long tails within your marketplace, and build a siloed and themed website without the need for paid tools. I will get into some paid tools which make this process even more valuable and easy later, but for now let’s see what these tools can do.

Are Marketing Research Surveys Bunk? 7

Survey Follow Through And Product Pricing Surveys

How To Setup Your Blog

Being an Internet marketer you must have your own domain name and web hosting. Having a domain name and hosting is affordable to almost everyone so Don’t look for free hosting. As an Internet marketer you are a professional and you need real tools and systems not cheap hosting which won’t allow you to grow.

You will need your own domain and hosting to setup your survey and blog. If you already have a domain and hosting that is fine. If not I recommend our hosting service review and setup at More Than Web Hosting. My site offers the very best hosting offers from the top hosting providers on the net and exclusive discounts. I also offer free site design with the purchase of hosting as well as other types of help in getting your site in shape.

I prefer hosting services which offer “Fantastico Installer”. This is so you can set up a Word Press blog very easily. You can install Word Press very quickly with Fantastico. Look it up on Google by typing in: install word press with fantastico.

Pricing Using Surveys

There is a good way to find out what your market is willing to pay for your product before you even begin to sell it. There is a difference however that needs to be noted once more. What people say they would think something is worth and what they will actually pay are two different things and it often just depends on ad copy and other conversion factors which I will cover in conversion posts.

A good way to find out ball park what people will pay for your product before you put it out to the world is to run a contest using Survey Methods. You set up a give away of a copy of the finished product as you will be in the creation phase while figuring the price out. Instead of asking people how much the product should cost you need to frame the question in a way which makes them think of other people and what they think other people who need it should or would pay.

You will give the survey contestants a real good write up about what all is included in the product including the hours that went into it. You want to flush out the value to the surveyors so they understand what went into making it. You will want to also frame the value of the product in terms of what it would be worth to the solution seeker in the future who wants the product. You want to ask the survey takers if someone had x problem and my product could solve that for them which would bring about x,y, and z benefit what should that person be willing to pay maximum and minimum for that solution. This then will be after the survey done for creation of the product and once the product is finished.

Then you will ask the surveyors to guess what they think it is worth as you already have set a price and the person closest to the actual price will win a free copy of the product. You will probably be surprised at what people tell you and end up changing what you thought it was worth. This information is perfect for the marketer to have, but it is even more important for the market to have. Letting your prospects know what they and other people have determined the value to be is a powerful tool — especially if the actual asking price is substantially lower.

So you put an entire background on your sales page as a value-building section (right before you reveal the price). When the product is released and the prospects discover the price of the program was only $77 – and has an introductory special price of just $57, they will rush to buy it. This is if you have properly built value and emotional benefits into your ad copy before announcing the price.

I will get into how to present your offer and how to use ad copy (the most powerful conversion tool) in upcoming posts.

The Questionnaire Respondents Are On My List – Now What?

Good Communication vs. Bad Communication

So we have our Survey setup and people start participating in it. We have started capturing people, putting our upcoming product in their subconscious, have started building a relationship with them, have invaluable input from our market about the product and we have the minds of the people. So what’s next?

Communication is the key to building a positive relationship with people and we already know that relationship building is key. There is a difference between good communication and poor communication. Good communication will enhance your chances of success and poor communication will take you a step closer to losing prospects.

The simple difference between good communication and poor communication is when your prospect is expecting and wanting good communication from you. However when there is no desire for your communication by your subscriber and you keep sending emails to them…that is poor communication.

In our case to communicate with the participants of the surveys we need to have “passive” communication. Passive communication means that communication is partially initiated by the prospect. They read your short email, come to the blog and a few even comment.

Instead of only sending emails about the product you are working on setting up a blog is more beneficial. A blog will serve the purpose of “Passive Communication”. It’s much easier to involve prospects in the whole product creation phase through a blog. People are already aware of your product from participating in the survey and now it’s natural that they would like to know more about the upcoming product.

You can send emails which include very short product creation updates with links that finish the main point of the email on the blog. This will help to keep the prospect coming back to see when the product is done and if you will answer their question with your product.

Your Central Communication Point

Your blog can be the center point of your communication during your product creation. It is a good idea to analyze the survey results and present that Analysis in a proper format on your blog. Then you can take further feedback/comments from people on your analysis and can give a feeling of continuous involvement to prospects.

This is human psychology that they develop a sense of loyalty towards the thing they helped in creating. They own the product already regardless of the fact that they haven’t actually bought it. If you are creating a large product and want to involve people in that one step further then you can also add a forum to your blog. If you have an uncomplicated product a blog is enough.

Communication through a blog is more effective than sending long emails by themselves since on a blog people will start communicating without being prompted and I refer to this as “passive communication”. The combination of email leading to a blog posting has been used successfully by many marketers.

Remember you should be focused on your product on the blog. Don’t distract your visitors with other things by putting advertisement links and promotions for other products/services. However if you have to share something which you feel is related to your product and will be interesting and beneficial to your reader then talk about that too.

If you want to learn as much about creating the absolute best market research survey possible and doubling your websites profits then I cannot recommend anyone or product more strongly than Dr. Glen Livingston’s “ How To Double Your Business”.
Collecting Opt In Subscribers On A Survey Form

What To Do With Marketing Survey Responses To Increase Sales

Send Name and Email to Subscription Page

You will inform your marketing research respondents that their name and email address will be added to your auto responder for future updates on the survey results as well as to let them know when your product will be available to them for download or purchase.

There is a way to configure Survey Methods to pass the name and email to the subscription page which is basically the Thank You page for the survey that you have configured on your own server. A professional account can capture your emails and names to your own auto-responder or to use an extra page to capture as we described.

The professional version of Survey Methods will pass the name and email address of your respondent into a subscription form automatically so they don’t have to enter their info again. Why is this important? The easier you make it for your prospects, the more chance they will participate in your survey and the higher the chance of a sale.

Managing the Survey Responses

Now you ran the survey and have a desired number of responses. What now? You need to understand everyone is going to word their questions differently. You will notice that many people have questions with similar themes. If you have a dog training survey you might get questions like:

Q: What’s the best way to teach a dog to listen?

Q: I can’t get my dog to obey me. How do I make him sit?

Q: Do you ever need to hit a dog to make them stop doing something?

Q: How often do you need to teach a dog obedience and for how long?

If you get many more with this theme you can see all of these are about dog obedience right? This is telling you to make a question about dog obedience. They’re are all different questions with the same theme and you can use this as a bullet point on your upcoming marketing material in this way:

The best method for getting your dog to listen, sit and obey you using a caring 200% proven easy and time saving method.

You need to look at all of the answers from respondents and look for similar themed questions and out of these create your bullet points. Create the bullets before you create your product so it will be the exact product your prospects want and will exchange money with you for value. Survey Methods makes this easy as it has a built in filtering system which you can use to segment various response types.

Setting Up Survey Forms And Thank You Pages

We last learned about how to setup your market survey headline and page text and now we come to setting up the form which will capture prospects who we want to convert into survey takers. These same questionnaire respondents will probably become some of our best clients.

The Survey Form

This form can be created by the Survey Methods service. There is an input box where the user will provide their answer to the questions. There are two fields to collect a Name and Email address so that you can communicate with your subscribers later. Please keep in mind that you should not advertise any product other than the product for which they participated in the survey.

You can communicate and follow up with them about the development of your
product but sending them advertisements for unrelated products or programs is not only unethical but also spam and can bring problems for your web site.

When the prospect presses the submit button the user will be captured in your
database and you will be able to see the answer to the question you asked the
prospect. This data will be available to you in the back office of Survey Methods.

Thank You Page

Once the prospect presses the submit button they will be redirected to a thank
you page. The idea of a thank you page is to give a confirmation to the user that
they have successfully completed the survey and to tell them thanks for participating in it.

As a marketer you can utilize this space for the marketing of your product. But
remember the main theme of a thank you page is to say thanks and send a
confirmation. Your marketing should be in tune with this theme. Instead of putting a bunch of different ads on this page you can offer your giveaway product on this page. Here is an example of what you can do on your thank you page.

Tom, We highly appreciate you for giving us your precious time and helping us build a better product to offer you. Here is a thank you gift for you. Please download your free copy of our report “Basics of Dog Training”.

If you don’t yet have a product to offer free and are taking the survey to actually
create your give away product then you can recommend some similar resources
to the topic. You can use your affiliate link for those resources or just offer the
free e-book when the product is finished.

Survey Methods will collect the name and email address of your respondents. Try out the free version first and see how much it helps you as you can always upgrade it once you are actually ready to capture leads. Once you do you will be able to export all the respondents out of the database.

If all of the people who are responding to your survey are already on your list and
if you’re not sending them anything later as a thank you gift then don’t worry.
However, if you’re creating a product and you are going to send it later you must
get these people on a list. What you need to do is put a subscription form on the
thank you page.

I recommend using Get Response service to build this subscription form and as your auto-responder for managing your lists. Make an auto-responder inside Get Response for these survey takers the way you normally would. If you don’t know how to do this do not worry I will cover auto responder management or better yet learn how at their site. Next create the auto responder form. Copy and paste the new form HTML code into the subscription page template attached to my previous article and you’re all set.

If you want to learn as much about creating the absolute best market surveys possible and doubling your websites profits then I cannot recommend anyone or product more strongly than Dr. Glen Livingston’s “How To Double Your Business”. His course can help you save your business in these rough economic times.
